OUR MISSION

To provide comprehensive primary healthcare to teens, adults, and seniors that is competent, compassionate, and confidential.

OUR VISION

To be the premier and preferred adult primary care practice in the north central region of Virginia.

OUR HISTORY

Piedmont Internal Medicine started out as a small, one-physician country practice located in The Plains, Virginia in the 1980s, where Dr. Barry Lupton had settled after retiring from a long medical career in the suburbs of New Jersey.  Initially intending to maintain simply a small, part-time practice, Dr. Lupton found himself overwhelmed by the needs of the underserved community in which he had settled.  The high volume of office patients, and the increasing number of patients he was caring for in the local hospital, soon led Dr. Lupton to relocate to office space on the campus of Fauquier Hospital in nearby Warrenton around 1990.

Meanwhile, Fauquier Hospital was taking note of the high demand for primary care throughout the region.  In 1992, Dr. Lupton and Fauquier Hospital agreed to recruit 3 additional general internists to join what was then called Warrenton Internal Medicine.  Dr. Christine Metzing joined in 1992 and Dr. William Simpson joined in 1993.  Growing weary of the increasing hassles posed by “managed care” (HMOs, PPOs), and comfortable with the level of care being delivered by his first two recruits, Dr. Lupton officially retired shortly thereafter, and moved to Cape Cod to enjoy New England with his family.  The practice’s third recruit, Dr. Kevin McCarthy, then joined in 1995.  With demand still growing, Dr. Demetrius Maoury was recruited and joined the group in 1996.

To allow for needed expansion of staff and space, the 4 doctors merged their blossoming practice in 1996 with 3 local family medicine practices.  The merger allowed for the creation of a pediatric division (now Piedmont Pediatrics) and the construction of a new 50,000 SF medical office building (Warrenton Professional Center) on Blackwell Road in Warrenton.  The new group was known as Piedmont Primary Care and consisted of an internal medicine division (for adults), a pediatric division (for children), and a family practice division (for all ages).  While Dr. Metzing resigned shortly after the merger, additional internists were recruited to the internal medicine division, including Dr. Jill Rosenstock and Dr. Diana Chalmeta right out of training, and Dr. Joseph David, who merged his solo practice into the group in 1999.  Dr. Rosenstock married and moved away, but was replaced shortly thereafter in 2002 by the highly recruited Dr. Jae Lee from a teaching position at the University of Maryland.

By 2003, Piedmont Primary Care had grown to a total of 18 physicians and several nurse practitioners.  At that point, for a host of reasons, the group decided to restructure back into separate practices – internal medicine, pediatrics, and family practice.  The internal medicine division renamed our practice Piedmont Internal Medicine, and its 6 physicians began plans to expand adult services and to relocate into new, expanded space just 5 blocks away, at the Piedmont Professional Center.

The year 2007 proved to be an exceedingly dynamic year for Piedmont Internal Medicine.  Although Dr. Chalmeta announced plans for an extended leave of absence, Dr. Gerhard Kraske was recruited from South Carolina, where he had provided primary care for over 10 years.  Additionally, the group completed construction of, and relocated into, brand new, state-of-the-art medical office suites in the Piedmont Professional Center, located in the Walker Business Park of Warrenton, Virginia.  The new space enabled the practice to broaden the scope of services offered, while at the same time, improving the comfort, efficiency, and privacy of those services.

After relocating, we were joined in our medical office building by Fauquier Health's Wellness Center, Dr. Sherry Maragh (Dermatology), and Dr. Gina Moore (Gynecology) - all representing wonderful complements to the primary care for adults we provide to the community. We also expanded our lab services to a "moderately complex" lab, offering more in-house testing than ever before, along with a host of ancillary testing services, including: 24 hr Holter monitoring, 24 hr BP monitoring, stress testing, pulmonary function testing, and home sleep monitoring.

In 2011, Dr. Kraske relocated to Wisconsin for family reasons, but we were fortunate to have Dr. Michelle Bell join our team shortly thereafter, adding even more choice for our patients.
