Your primary care physician at Piedmont Internal Medicine can help you reduce or eliminate tobacco use and excessive alcohol use. There are various techniques and medications available to help.
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Excessive weight contributes to a host of health problems, from fatigue to arthritis, to heart disease. Your primary care physician at Piedmont Internal Medicine can help you reduce or eliminate excessive weight or refer you to specialists who can.
ALLERGY SHOTS
For those patients who are having their allergies treated by shots, our staff at Piedmont Internal Medicine can store the injectables on site, order refills when needed, administer the shots as prescribed, and monitor for effectiveness and complications, if any.
VACCINATIONS
Vaccines are not just for children. National guidelines call for adults to be vaccinated per the following general guidelines:
Against Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis (Every 10 yrs)
Against Steptococcal Pneumonia (Once after age 65; Before age 65 if chronically ill . . .)
Against Influenza (Every Fall)
Against Human Papilloma Virus (Between age 12-26)
Against Hepatitis B, if at risk (Requires 3 doses)
Against Shingles (once after age 60)
Against Menigitis, if at risk
Against many other viruses, if traveling to certain countries
There are variations to this general schedule for certain situations and conditions. Your primary care physician will diligently review your specific vaccine needs with you and ensure that you are up to date. If you and your doctor agree that you need a particular vaccine, it will be skillfully administered by one of our trained staff.
SKIN AND NAIL PROCEDURES
Many of our physicians at Piedmont Internal Medicine are trained and skilled at treating various skin and nail conditions, such as:
removal of skin tags
removal of concerning moles
removal of keratoses
removal of cysts
opening and draining infected boils / abscesses
freezing actinic keratoses (precancerous growths)
opening and draining ingrown nail infections

EAR WAX REMOVAL
Ear canals can sometimes become clogged with excess wax and require water irrigation for removal. The staff at Piedmont Internal Medicine are trained to extract wax from blocked ear canals.
STEROID INJECTIONS
Sometimes, the best way to reduce inflammation in a painful joint or tendon is to inject a small amount of steroid into the inflamed area. Many of our physicians at Piedmont Internal Medicine are trained to administer such injections when needed.
HOSPITAL CARE
As of summer 2007, Piedmont Internal Medicine has arranged for highly specialized care of our patients who require local hospitalization at the Fauquier Hospital, using “hospitalists” – physicians who staff the hospital around-the-clock and whose entire focus is on the patients there. Without office and outpatient distractions, and through close communication and consultation with your primary care physician, the hospitalists add enhanced convenience, accessibility, and efficiency to the quality care you have always received by our doctors at our local Fauquier Hospital. These hospital physicians have access to your doctor and your records at the practice. Upon discharge, they send us detailed accounts of your stay so we know what was found, what was done, and what is left to be done in followup, if anything. The idea of using hospitalists to improve your hospital stay is a positive trend that is sweeping the country, and we are pleased to be able to offer it to our patients.
REHABILITATION CARE
Many patients who are injured or who fall ill find it best to spend time in a rehabilitation center before returning home. There are three in the immediate area – Fauquier Health Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Oak Springs, and Gainesville Rehab -- and Piedmont Internal Medicine has physicians on staff at all three to help care for our patients who spend time there.
NURSING HOME CARE
When patients of our practice become frail enough to require stays in long term care facilities, such as assisted living homes, group homes, and nursing homes, Piedmont Internal Medicine physicians are available to help direct their medical care in these facilities. We have physicians with privileges at Fauquier Health Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Oak Springs, and Gainesville Rehab and we on occasion visit patients at Amerisist, Sunrise, and the Blue Ridge Christian Home.
HOSPICE CARE
For terminally ill patients who need end-of-life comfort care, the services of a hospice nurse can be invaluable. The physicians at Piedmont Internal Medicine work very closely with the local hospice nurses to ensure optimal comfort to patients in their final months of life.
